Outlander by Diana Gabaldon Book Review
The Second World War had just ended when an army nurse, Claire Randall, is transported back in time to 1743. This is the background to Outlander, an epic novel written by Diana Gabaldon in 1991; it is a multi-genre novel that weaves together action, suspense, and romance into a beautiful story. In fact, even when there wasn’t a fight between the native Scotsmen and the enemy “Redcoats”, or a witch trial in full swing, the novel never failed to make the reader want to know desperately what will happen next. Told from the point of view of Claire, the Scotland Highlands and Highlander way of life is unfolded to the reader, the storytelling was so beautifully put that there were times where I could close my eyes and imagine the stunning green landscape before me.
Throughout the novel, Claire is faced with constant decisions that affect what will happen to her in the past and in the future, it is not as confusing as it sounds! Actually, it is such a pleasant read that before you know it, the 800 pages are read and you are craving the sequel, Dragonfly in Amber. This book is perfect for anyone who wants to travel not only to a gorgeous setting, the Scottish Highlands, but to a time long ago, where Highlander warriors and fierce clan chieftains were as common as cars are today.
