“Oz the Great & Powerful” is based on a magician who gains the wisdom to become a powerful ruler. Director Sam Raimi and screenwriters Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire explore this film through the works of the author L. Frank Baum’s tales of Oz. Illusionist Oscar Diggs (James Franco) fascinates audiences at a Kansas circus and is a con man, who aspires to follow in the footsteps of inventors like Thomas Edison as the movie progresses. Oscar is being chased across the circus grounds during the time of a tornado, and when a hot-air balloon approaches, Oscar jumps into the hot-air balloon as he flies away.
Oscar is then transported to the world of Oz, and meets Theodora (Mila Kunis), an unreliable witch who believes that he is the wizard named after their land (his nickname is Oz), and hopes to rise from the throne and defeat a witch. Theodora takes Oscar to the Emerald City to meet her sister Evanora (Rachel Weisz), an influential witch who wants Oz to defeat the “wicked” witch before taking the throne. As Oscar and his flying-monkey friend Finley (voice of Zach Braff) prepare to face their enemy, they’re joined by the China Girl (voice of Joey King) and the witch Glinda the Good (Michelle Williams), who helps them prepare for the difficult battle that is about to occur. Oscar and with the help of the people of Oz work together in order to get rid of the evil of the city, and become the “Wizard of Oz” of Emerald City. Mackenzie Cutruzzula stated, “This movie was truly great, and left me in tears.” Rachel Fanaro added, “It was very funny!” Overall, this was a fantastic movie that people of all ages should go see.
