The Great Gatsby follows Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing the American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super-rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles. Rachel Fanaro quoted, “I was excited for the movie, having loved the book and I certainly wasn’t expecting such an over the top rendition. But I loved it!”
With crazy party scenes and fast past dialogue this new version of the classic tale gave viewers a wild ride. Baz Luhrmann directed in his true colorful fashion following suit of his other films, Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge!. He incorporates high fashion and big music numbers in this major production. Jay-Z produced the score of the movie with an interesting take; he was able to take modern songs and set them to 1920’s tunes, setting the film’s mood. Tiffany and Co. created the jewelry line and Brooks Brother’s supplied the fashion. With big names and numbers the movie was a success of Gatsby size himself!
