North Arlington High School has taken the plunge into modern day journalism by introducing their school newspaper, the Viking Saga, to the web. The small staff of nine has a lot on their hands due to an unfamiliar demand of instant updating of the website. They are working collaboratively and aiming to produce at least two to three stories each per week to keep the Viking Saga as current and up to date as possible.
Although the Viking Saga online has some of the same features as it did when it was published in print, a few more categories have been added to the website. Some of the new features of the website are: Student Life, Sports, Opinion and Editorials, a constantly updated Gallery of Pictures and Videos, Podcasting, Upcoming Events, Calendars, and much more. The online publication also has the advantage of enabling readers to view all of the visuals in color – much more appealing and certainly worthy of people’s attention.
In addition to the current staff writers, the Viking Saga advisors are also encouraging students to contribute to this new online publication by becoming freelance writers, photographers and videographers. This creates an excellent opportunity for all North Arlington high school students to not only explore their journalistic writing ability but also their 21st century technological skills.
At the moment, the Viking Saga is accessible through the North Arlington High School website. The advisors and staff welcome all visitors to the site and encourage them to read and learn about the events taking place at the high school.
