Devastation swept the country when the news of Lance Corporal Osbrany Montes De Oca’s death was announced. This 20 year old hero was more than just a Marine; he was a boyfriend, a brother, and a son. Osbrany was a graduate of North Arlington High School class of 2010. Osbrany enjoyed his time at home with his brothers Osmany, Sandro, and Franklin. Franklin’s reaction to his brother’s untimely death was very depressing. “He was a great guy and a hero” stated Franklin. His two other brothers remain active Marines; however, they returned home to join their family during this difficult time.
Lance Corporal Osbrany Montes De Oca’s body was brought to Parow Funeral Home to prepare for the wake on February 19th. People snaked down the sidewalk outside the funeral home in hopes of getting inside to pay their respects to the fallen hero and his family. The next day, a mass was held at Queen of Peace Roman Catholic Church. After the mass, Montes De Oca’s body was escorted down Ridge Road through thousands of men and women paying tribute to the Marine. A large American flag was suspended over Ridge Road from two fire trucks as the line of cars and motorcycles passed under and into Holy Cross Cemetery.
The funeral of this true American hero took place in the 9/11 section of Holy Cross Cemetery. The 21 gun salute was performed as many onlookers watched the casket be lowered into the earth. Both English and Spanish prayers were said and the flag was presented to the family of the fallen Marine. On Tuesday, February 21st, Governor Chris Christie ordered that the flags in New Jersey be lowered to half-mast to honor Osbrany’s dedication and sacrifice for his country.
