This November there will be yet another United States presidential election. The candidates are President Barack Obama, who is a Democrat, and Mr. Mitt Romney, the former Governor of Massachusetts, who is a Republican. Many topics have been key in the presidential race, including: gay marriage, endorsements, wealth, economy, abortion and contraception, immigration, foreign policy, and taxing millionaires.
On October 3rd, the first debate between the two candidates, took place in Denver, Colorado. This was an important debacle for both candidates, who equally have the same chance of winning. Coincidentally, the debate fell on President Obama and Michelle Obama’s 20th Anniversary. The main topic of the debate was fixing the economy, and each candidate had different opinions on how they would fix it. There has been controversy about Mitt Romney because it has been said before that he plans to cut taxes for the wealthy and raise taxes for the middle class. Mr. Romney denied these accusations and says he wants to “cut marginal taxes by 20 percent.”
Romney stated later in the debate that there were 32 million people on food stamps when President Obama began his term and now there are 47 million people on food stamps. He seemed displeased with President Obama’s work on trying to make more jobs for Americans, and claimed that there are 23 million citizens who are currently unemployed. The two both disputed this topic, as well as many others, including education. Both candidates stated that the key to great schools are great teachers. They still had different opinions on education, but agreed that teachers really make the difference. The hour and a half event was very intense and both candidates made very good points on each topic discussed.
There are two presidential debates and one vice presidential debate scheduled within the month of October. The presidential election is on Tuesday, November 6th, and if you’re eligible to vote, please do so.
