Many people have probably heard about Kwanzaa but are not quite sure what the holiday is and who celebrates it. First of all, Kwanzaa is a newer holiday compared to many other holidays in the United States. It was first celebrated in Winter 1966-1967. It is a holiday mainly celebrated by African Americans to honor their heritage. Kwanzaa is celebrated from December 26 to January 1.
Similar to Hanukkah, people who celebrate Kwanzaa light candles for each night. These candles are called the Kinara. The seven candles on the Kinara represent the 7 principles of Kwanzaa. These seven principles are: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. The holiday may be celebrated with drumming and other musical selections as well. Dr. Maulana Karenga created Kwanzaa 46 years ago. The purpose for this holiday was for the African Americans to have their own holiday and show respect for their ancestors and appreciate their heritage. Many African Americans who celebrate Kwanzaa will also celebrate Christmas and New Year’s as well.
