Valentine’s Day is a very interesting time of the year. Though for most it is seen as a day to celebrate with a significant other, for others it is viewed as a day to be reminded that they are single. However, the holiday should not be seen in such a negative light! Valentine’s Day is the one day a year when it is especially encouraged to share your love for others around you like parents, grandparents, and friends. In addition, it does not have to cost a fortune to get your message across. According to history.com, “More than half of the U.S. Population celebrates Valentine’s Day by purchasing a greeting card.” The other half of the population tends to prefer gifts not purchased at a store, like a home cooked favorite dish, handmade Valentine’s card, or a burned CD of some favorite songs. “It’s definitely not the price tag that matters – it’s how much thought was put into the gift.” said Mackenzie Cutruzzula.
There are various legends that provide the background story of Valentine’s Day. As stated on history.com, one popular legend contends that Saint Valentine was a priest who married young women and men together despite the Emperor’s decree. The most widely believed legend, however, contends that Valentine was jailed for aiding Christians escape prisons in which they were cruelly treated. He later sent the first “valentine” greeting after he fell in love with a girl who visited him during his imprisonment. Before death, he signed his note, “From your Valentine” – phrase still commonly used today. In conclusion, whether celebrating with friends, a boyfriend, or girlfriend, Valentine’s Day should indeed be enjoyed.
