Relay for Life is an annual event and this year it will be held on May 17, 2013. It is an event to raise awareness for cancer and raise money for cancer research. It is an overnight event that has at least one member from a team walking around the track. When I asked Mrs. Maresca, who participates in the Relay for Life annually, she said that this year there will be more events going on throughout that night. She also informed me that the reason it is overnight is because of the saying “cancer never sleeps.” The people that attend the event never sleep and are involved in the activities that are held.
When asked what she would say to a student thinking about going to the relay, Mrs. Maresca said, “It’s an experience that you will never forget.” She also said that “It’s rewarding because you know you are doing your part to help the cancer research.”
According to the American Cancer Society, 1 of every 3 women will develop cancer at some point in their lives. 1 out of 2 men will develop cancer in their lifetimes. These people can possibly be a loved one or even yourself. One way or another cancer touches many peoples’ lives. The Relay for Life is a way to raise awareness and help out with money to research.
