Henn tattoos, also known as Mehndi, are a form of temporary tattoos. Coming from a south Asian tradition, henna uses a paste made from the powdered leaves of the Henna plant. Though traditional henna is drawn in delicate patterns on the hands and feet, modern henna is applied in all sorts of designs anywhere on the body. Unlike other forms of temporary tattoos, henna only comes in shades of reds, browns, and blacks. Henna tattoos can last days to over a month depending on application and aftercare.
However, caution should be taken as many products labeled henna are misleading. Fast-staining “black henna” can containpara-phenylenediamine (PPD) which can cause allergic reactions and scarring. Despite these risks, each year many students go down the shore and commemorate the prom weekend getaway by getting a henna tattoo. Many seniors especially took the plunge and got many different designs. In fact, Amy Lin and Rachel Fanaro got henna’s of “AP Lit” to pay homage to their teacher, Mrs. Hughes. Senior Sara Rozycki commented, “Henna tattoos are a fun and temporary way to get a tattoo. I love mine!” In summation, though risk factors should always be thoroughly looked into, henna tattoos are an enjoyable way to express oneself.
