Born in October of 1925 in the small market town of Grantham in Eastern England, Margaret Thatcher is a true inspiration. Her political career has been one of the most remarkable of modern times. In the beginning, Margaret Thatcher grew up helping her family run their shop and eventually went to study at Oxford University. Her father was a town-wide conservative politician who motivated Margaret to eventually follow a lifelong career in politics. She later won the first female seat in Parliament and even became Secretary of Education in 1970 after marrying Denis Thatcher.
In time, Ms. Thatcher rose to become the first, and for two decades, the only woman to lead a major Western democracy. As it turns out, she continued to win the next three General Elections, over eleven years, an unsurpassed record. Having been affectionately called the “Iron Lady” by the Soviet Union, Thatcher’s strong will and determination made her able to reshape nearly all aspects of British aspects from reviving the economy, reforming outdated institutions, and reinvigorating the nation’s foreign policy. Having been frequently held in the same regard as England’s other beloved Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, it is safe to say that Margaret Thatcher has become one of the world’s most controversial, dynamic, and plain-spoken leaders. Despite her recent death on April 8, 2013 in London, England, Margaret Thatcher is sure to remain an enduring, influential and respected political leader who broke all barriers not just for what one woman could do, but one person.
