Thousands of people marched from Washington Square Park all the way through the
New York City Police Station in the afternoon of Saturday, December 20th. It’s crazy to say but two of my fellow classmates and I took part in this great cause to stop racism around the world. The march for Eric Garner and Mike Brown was a genuine experience that I will never forget. When we first started walking everyone was filled with mixed emotions some were crying and others were smiling. All and all, everyone was just excited that they were making a difference.
Sirens blared in the background and a helicopters’ searchlight flashed on protesters chanting. It was frightening at first because it was my first ever protest but being with everyone from different ethnic backgrounds and beliefs made me feel safe. Nya Mcintosh (fellow classmate at NAHS) decided to take a stand and lead the way. She was asked to take the blow horn and while walking up and down the sidewalk she chanted: “No justice, no peace. No racist police.” Several people came to watch and police officers stood in a line on the side of the street watching us go by.
At the end of the night, we were all tired but amazed at what we had accomplished. We also met some amazing people who have been contributing their life to make this world a better place. Nya Mcintosh, Sohila Mohamed, and I will forever fight for our rights and for the rights of those who that cannot do so.
