Golden Globes Awards 2018
The Golden Globes was the first major show to kick off the 2018 awards season. This year, various hits of 2017 were nominated including Get Out, Ladybird, Dunkirk and Call Me By Your Name, surely it was going to be a competitive night. Besides the awards themselves, the next best thing was the red carpet before the show begins. Every year, reporters swarm the stars and ask a very important question: “who are you wearing?”. This year, though, was different.
It didn’t matter what designer the celebrities were wearing because the conversation revolved around the fact that nearly every star on the red carpet was wearing black. Prior to the awards night and in the wake of the several sexual harassment allegations of famous producers, actors and directors, many Hollywood women banded together to found the Time’s Up coalition to help women who need legal representation in such claims throughout all industries. This was the topic at hand on the red carpet, no longer the superficial trivialities but the difficult but nevertheless truth of how women are treated in the workplace.
This conversation continued throughout the night and one of the most impactful moments was Oprah Winfrey’s speech for acceptance of the Cecile B. DeMille award. In her moving speech, Winfrey said, “I’m especially proud and inspired by all the women who have felt strong enough, and empowered enough to speak up and share their personal stories”. This was truly a historic night. Naturally, the show went on and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri took home Best Motion Picture-Drama while Ladybird got Best Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy. What a wonderful night!
