The idea of TikTok being banned has been talked about for the past year. The Biden administration had taken the lead on it while they were still in office. The ban was temporarily in effect on January 19, 2025. It was only down for 12 hours and a new deadline for banning it has been set.
President Trump signed an executive order to delay TikTok’sban for 75 days. The law went into effect quickly. Trump says, “The U.S. should be entitled to get half of TikTok,” he says this in case there is a deal made. Even with all of this talk, the order is not set in stone. It could face legal challenges if the President can stop enforcement of a federal law. As of now, the order stands and there are discussions of someone buying the app.
Furthermore, there have been talks with many companies about who will buy TikTok. President Trump is dealing with this personally and has stated that he is not talking with Oracle, even though it was rumored. Oracle is an American-founded technology company. The President would like an American company to buy TikTok, or at least part of TikTok so that the data collection can be monitored. A few other companies interested are Microsoft, Bloomberg, and Project Liberty. There is a very high chance that one American company will get the chance to buy TikTok.
