Every year North Arlington High School students have the privilege of teaching toddlers for one class period a day. We have had this childcare program for a couple of decades and it is still going very strong. Child Development at N. A. H. S. is when toddlers come in to class and students have an opportunity to experience how it is to work with children. Students create a lesson plan for the children so they learn and get a good first experience of school.
I believe Child Development class gives students a good first experience on how to work with toddlers, especially if they have never worked with children before. Interacting with the children comes easy with the help of our teacher, Ms. Dempsey. Although some children cry at times, they are undoubtedly terrific. I can say that walking into that classroom every day and working with the children truly brightens up my day.
I believe that being in Child Development class is a privilege and also a tremendous responsibility because students become role models to the children. Just like our teachers are our role models, we have to teach these children and show them right from wrong. The feeling of helping a younger child and knowing that you made an impact on their life is very rewarding. It’s their first impression of school, so we must give it our all to make sure they are comfortable and happy to be in this new environment.
