This has been an issue around for centuries. Parents often say to their children to “dress to impress” or about “first impressions.” Aristotle once stated, “A tyrant must put on the appearance of uncommon devotion to religion. Subjects are less apprehensive of illegal treatment from a ruler whom they consider god-fearing and pious.” This quote truly exemplifies how people should not be judgmental.
Is this true? Do first impressions really count? There has to be a reason why this has been around for so long. According to Mike Myatt, America’s Top CEO Coach, author of “Leadership Matters…The CEO Survival Manual,” and moderator of the N2growth Blog, first impressions should not matter, however, in reality they certainly do. First impressions are very important for both employers and friends. I too believe that in the professional world one does need to “dress to impress.” In school, I think that it makes no difference.
When asked about first impressions, most students stated that how someone looks does not change the way people view him/her. On the other hand, most teachers believe that the way people dress, whether it be in school or at work, does influence how others view them. This demonstrates that younger people don’t really believe in first impressions, while older and mature people do. A good example that comes to mind of someone who does not dress to the norm is Lady Gaga. People like her precisely because she is unique and different. Students should dress according to their singular personality and not worry about what others may think!
