In 2012, music once again took over the mainstream world. Many new artists have emerged this past year, few were good and lots of poor musicians. On MTV.com it lists ‘Call Me Maybe’ by Carly Rae Jepsen as the #1 song of 2012. How preposterous is that? The song was heard on radio stations for months to my dismay, as well as many others.
I feel that I can relate to one pop group though, Fun. Their music has an upbeat feeling and their lyrics have great meaning, unlike artists such as One Direction. Fun. differs from other pop artists because they write their own lyrics, and the lyrics are accompanied with all sorts of instruments to make their pop sound more unique. What many people fail to realize, is that Fun. has better songs than their hits ‘We Are Young’ and ‘Some Nights’, they are just the most mainstream sounding off their newest album ‘Some Nights’, which was released in February of 2012.
In my opinion, music has gone downhill drastically throughout the last decade and it’s a sad thing. Pop music and mainstream artists are not as talented as the common person may think. Usually those artists are pawns in the music industry. Producers write the songs for them, tell them what to do, and they do it. These artists sell out for fame and fortune, which is not what music is about. Artists should be able to write their own music and express their own opinions in their songs, not giving the people a pop song with a cheesy chorus that everyone can sing along too. Music should be from the heart, not from some producer’s mind.
