All of the students at North Arlington High School are aware of the different technology advances that are available such as, Turnitin, Edmodo, and Wikispaces. These programs are supposed to be beneficial to students because they allow them to submit papers and reports online in a more efficient and easier way. This also enables the students to have contact with fellow classmates and even their teachers. The real question is: are students really finding these resources to be beneficial or are they seeing them as a hassle?
Many students do not find resources such as Turnitin easy to use and don’t believe it is a useful way to learn. Rebecca Filgueiras stated, “Students should have a say in whether they would like to submit their paper online or present a hard copy to their teacher.” By doing so, students have an opportunity to submit their papers in a way they are more comfortable.
In addition, some students may not be able to afford a computer at home which causes many problems to arise when it comes down to doing papers and especially now having to hand them in online. According to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration in 2000, “Forty percent of American households now have computers, but only 8 percent of poor families do.” Although the rate of computers may have increased majorly since 2000, many families still to this day do not have access to a computer whenever they would like. In conclusion, the thought of having all these technological advances may seem like a positive idea; however, there are some negative effects that take place as well.
