Lack of shelter is an issue that affects not only humans but animals as well. One of the factors that contributes to this problem is owners deciding that they no longer want a pet. The increasing number of abandoned animals shows that this happens more frequently than most realize. It has come to the point where shelters do not have room for more animals and they have to turn animals away. When this occurs, street animals face an uncertain future. It gets even worse in winter because of the cold weather.
Animal shelters take in more than 6 million unwanted pets a year. The high cost of veterinarian care is another reason for the abandonment of animals. Many animal advocates believe that spaying and neutering would reduce the number of abandoned pets because obviously less would be born. In addition, although there are some laws against animal cruelty, many more should be enacted and enforced. Saving these animals from being homeless is important. It is important to note that pets should be treated humanely at all times by their owners.
