This year’s Super Bowl LIX was held at Louisiana’s well-known Caesars Superdome with a halftime performance by Kendrick Lamar. With the thirteen-minute performance filled with a string of Lamar’s best hits, his performance also featured an abundant amount of political statements. Legendary actor Samuel L. Jackson made an appearance as an “Uncle Sam” character. At the same time, SZA came out to perform “Luther” and “All The Stars” and tennis icon, Serena Williams, came out for a cool and casual (crip walk).
Compared to halftime performances from past Super Bowls, this year’s show was less flashy, more political, and to make a statement about the ongoing conflict between Kendrick and Drake. Kendrick walked out in a leather bomber jacket by Martine Rose, light denim jeans, a backward baseball cap, and a glimmering “A” chain for his show while his dancers wore red, white, and blue sweat suits as they danced up and down the field throughout the performance.
Kendrick’s Grammy-winning song, “Not Like Us”, which won song and record of the year, and other songs like “Humble”, “Squabble Up” and “TV Off” all had their moments on stage. While many viewers were watching the halftime show, many were confused and questioned what Lamar’s “A” chain stood for, the clothes his dancers wore, and why Lamar chose to sing “Not Like Us”.
