The annual Super Bowl was played on Sunday, February 3rd, and the Baltimore Ravens became victorious and ousted the San Francisco 49ers, to win their 2nd Super Bowl. The Ravens beat the 49ers 34-31, in a dramatic finish at the Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The Ravens led the 49ers at halftime by a score of 21-6, thanks to quarterback Joe Flacco’s three touchdown passes. The Ravens received the ball at the start of the second half, and wide-receiver Jacoby Jones returned the kick 108 yards for a touchdown. Now the Ravens are leading 28-6, and the game is looking like a blowout. Subsequently, half of the stadium lights went out in the Superdome. This was a big shock to many people in the stadium and everyone watching the game at home, because there have never been any electrical or light malfunctions like that in the Super Bowl ever. The delay to restore the electricity in half of the stadium halted play in the game for approximately 35 minutes.
Game play resumed after the long break, and this gave the 49ers a chance to regroup and re-strategize to try to pull together and get back in the game. The 49ers scored 2 touchdowns in a matter of a little over 2 minutes, which is outstanding, and they were back in business. The 49ers finished out the third quarter with a 34 yard field goal, and the score was 28-23.
In the early minutes of the 4th quarter, the Ravens made an easy 19 yard field goal to stretch their lead. The 49ers bounced back and quarterback Colin Kaepernick ran for a 15 yard touchdown, and they opted to go for the two -point conversion, but it failed. The score was now 31-29 and the Ravens would make another field goal to make it 34-29. The 49ers failed to score on a goal line stand and they turned the ball over to the Ravens in the final minute of play. Next, the Ravens’ punter ran out of bounds in his own end-zone for a safety, but that didn’t matter because they punted the ball away with 4 seconds left and the game was over.
This game was definitely one to remember; Ray Lewis’ last game ever, 49ers’ rookie quarterback Colin Kaepernick almost coming back to win, and last but surely not least, Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco’s outstanding performance to lead the Ravens to the win. Flacco who threw for 287 yards and 3 touchdowns, was named the Super Bowl’s Most Valuable Player. This game turned into a very exciting one, and I for one am excited for next year’s season already!
