There are not enough words to describe the NFL Draft. It was shocking, unexpected, and daring to say the least. Quarterback Marcus Mariota was drafted 2nd overall by the Tennessee Titans, leaving many to wonder why the Philadelphia Eagles didn’t move up the board and take him. Instead, the Eagles drafted wide receiver Nelson Agholor, a 6’0, 198-pound speedsters out of USC. Later, The Eagles also drafted talented cornerback Eric Rowe from Utah and explosive linebacker Jordan Hicks from Texas. The St. Louis Rams shocked the world when they drafted Georgia running back Todd Gurley with the 10th overall pick. The New York Jets made some noise by drafting quarterback Bryce Petty from Baylor, who slipped to the 4th round for reasons unknown. Many believe he is going to win the starting job from fellow Jets quarterback Geno Smith.
Also, the Washington Redskins picked offensive lineman Brandon Scherff with the 5th overall selection. That shocked many people because an offensive lineman doesn’t usually go in the first five picks, but it made sense. The Redskins need someone who can block and protect the quarterback and Scherff can do that. The Minnesota Vikings came out swinging with the 11th overall pick as they selected cornerback Trae Waynes, the most sought-after cornerback in this draft. He should provide some secondary help for that struggling Vikings defense. Lastly, the San Diego Chargers filled their running back vacancy by drafting Melvin Gordon, a 6’1 running back from the Wisconsin Badgers. He has the size to plow over defenders and can run much like Todd Gurley. At the end of the three-day draft process, some teams hit the jackpot and surprised football fans everywhere while others didn’t address all their needs. Only time will tell who shines and who busts in their rookie seasons.
