Crew Season Starts
The wintry weather may be in full swing and spring may seem like a far-away dream, but that hasn’t stopped our school’s spring sports from opening their seasons. Especially, not our school’s rowing team. On March 6th, the crew team’s varsity went on the water for the first time this year. The weather was optimal and the water was perfect for the first row; many on the team believe this to be a good omen for the season to come.
The first race that the varsity team participated in was on March 26th, in Philadelphia at the Schuylkill River. For many on the team, this was their very first varsity race and for others the beginning of their final season, yet the entire team was excited to race.
At the end of the day, one of the JV girls boats got second place in their heat and overall (out of 13 boats), while the varsity double and the other JV girls boat got third place in their heats. The two boy singles that raced also did very well in their races, especially for their first time racing on a single. Everyone on the team was expecting rain and cold for the whole day but was delighted to find the weather overcast and cold—which was no small blessing.
The first race was a successful launch of this year’s crew season and the team can hardly wait for the next race—on April 2nd—where, hopefully, the weather will be warmer and the boats get another shot at first place.
