NA Girls Varsity Basketball Team – A State Win for the First Time in over 11 years
In the NJSIAA opening round North 2, Group 1 girls basketball game on March 1st at Wood-Ridge, the North Arlington Girls Basketball team outscored Wood-Ridge 17-4 in the second quarter to seize command and defeat Wood-Ridge by 47-31. Wood-Ridge had taken an early 8-4 lead before North Arlington battled back to level the game at 8-8 at the half. On a Sophie Basich three-point field goal with 7:08 left in the half, the Lady Blue Devils seized the lead 11-10.
To seize control of the game, the Vikings embarked on a 13-0 run that lasted until there were 9.9 seconds left in the quarter. North Arlington put up a basket just before halftime to put the Vikings up 25-12 at the break. In the second half, the Lady Blue Devils of Wood – Ridge were only able to put five points to cut the lead to eight points, before a North Arlington five-point run opened the lead back up.
Sophia Velosa had 14 points to lead North Arlington, while Pegi Bracaj had 12, thus bringing home the Girls Basketball Team’s first state win in over 11 years. North Arlington was also able to continue its late-season hot streak, having won seven of its last eight games. Great job Vikings!
