On Monday, December 12th, Mrs. Hughes and Mrs. Albuquerque’s AP Literature and English 4 Honors classes took a trip to New York City to see the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit at the Discovery Museum in Times Square. What exactly are Dead Sea Scrolls? They are the very first collection of texts from the Hebrew Bible that were found in the Dead Sea. These texts are extremely valuable and getting to see them in New York was a once in a lifetime opportunity for the students. The actual stone from the Western Wall from the Second Temple in Jerusalem was available to be viewed along with more than 500 different artifacts from biblical times.
The exhibit started with the students entering a room with the biblical terms posted upon the wall and live video from Jerusalem showing along with a spoken introduction from a tour guide. The students then led themselves through the exhibit to admire all of the ancient artifacts that were available. Some students even wrote a prayer and placed it on an actual 3-ton stone from the Holy Land’s Western Wall. The prayers will be collected and brought to the actual wall itself in Jerusalem. This experience was wonderful for the students and they were pleased to be a part of an educational venture such as this one.
