According to recent breast cancer statistics, in 2012, it was estimated that among U.S. women there will be 226,870 new cases of invasive breast cancer as well as 2,190 new cases amongst men. The month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month which increases the awareness of the disease. The students and faculty of North Arlington High School are showing their support by fighting the cause. On Friday October 5, 2012 the Viking community displayed their support towards this cause by wearing pink attire to school. Also, members of Student Council went to allof the classrooms where students and faculty donated money or were able to buy pink ribbons. In total, we received about $450 which will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Nancy G. Brinker, sister of Susan G. Komen,(Founder of the Susan G. Komen Foundation) stated, “…In our first three decades, Susan G. Komen for the Cure raised more than $2 billion for breast cancer research, education and services. “Race for the Cure” events united volunteers around the globe.” By stating this, one can see that donating to this fund can help benefit and expand the breast cancer research even more.
“Our school came together on October 5th to make an impact and difference,” stated senior Rachel Fanaro. For more information about the Susan G. Komen Foundation or anything regarding breast cancer, visit ww5.komen.org.
