This year Nutley’s Relay for Life was held on the evening of May 17th, 2013 into May 18th. The event was a major success with teams coming everywhere from Church groups to other local high schools. At the very start of the night, event officials announced that over $70,000 had been raised, that number is sure to only have grown as the night went on. North Arlington High School specifically contributed with over $7,000! Relay for Life is an affair in which teams from nearby areas go to a field and camp-out under the stars and have someone from their group walk throughout the night. This is done to symbolize that since cancer never sleeps; neither do those who are searching for a cure.
One of the participants of the relay, Christina Haag, had this to say about the night, “It was a great experience I recommend to any underclassmen. It was very rewarding to raise money for such a worthy cause.” In the beginning, students first start out by setting up their tents for later on and then the opening walk/ceremony is held. Next, students divide out times for them to walk throughout the night and whenever they have time off can join in on activities being run by the officials or grab a bite to eat. Sara Rozycki elaborated on how she spent her time off, “When I was on break from walking, I joined the Zumba demonstration. It was a fun way to spend the time off from walking.” All in all, the night was certainly full of fulfilling and memorable times.
