Comi-Con 2016
Comi-Con, a famed convention among the science fiction community, video game fans, anime lovers, and cosplayers (people who dress up as their favorite characters on a daily basis or for public events), was held this year in its usual spot at the Javits Center in New York City. Every year, thousands of fans go to Comi-Con on the East and West coasts to meet up with their favorite voice-actors, Youtubers, game developers, tv stars, or just to dress up and have a good time. There are costume contests, meet-ups with celebrities and writers/developers for media, artist venues for upcoming talents who display their works for all to see, panels for shows most people in the Comi-Con gen pool have seen at least once. For many people, it is their one day to shine in their costume or to achieve their dream of meeting an actor or actress from Doctor Who.
I had the opportunity to go to the event with a friend who pretty much outdone herself as one of our favorite characters from the webcomic Ava’s Demon. Once we got to the center and scanned our passes, we waited in line for a couple of panels from Impractical Jokers and Doctor Who- Two of her favorite shows. Both panels were extremely entertaining, and afterword we went over to get her picture taken with the star of one of Doctor Who’s famous seasons- Matt Smith. (Smith played the 11th Doctor on the show). My friend ended up being extremely excited and right before she left I ended up waving and saying hi to him. He said “Thank you, bye bye now” as he smiled and waved – I was pretty enthusiastic.
Afterwards, we went to the Show floor which consists of every bit of merchandise one could think of for any sort of fandom. Harry Potter, Steven Universe, My Little Pony, Doctor Who, Pusheen the Cat, Five Nights at Freddy’s, etc. I ended up buying a couple of art prints and accumulated a few more at the Artist Alley Venue right after. Overall, I had a great time and highly recommend this convention if you are into the sorts of things that they offer there.
