Drumming to a New Beat
It is always wonderful to hear that our students are accomplishing great things both inside and outside of school. One prime example of this kind of student is senior Taylor Willis. As a marching band drum major and Tri-M Honor Society officer, she is also a member of the Bergen County Junior Commission on the Status of Women.
As part of the commission, Taylor must attend monthly meetings where she discusses women’s rights and current issues facing women in the community with other young women from Bergen County. Her efforts both on the commission and in school have been recognized as she has been selected to receive the Youth Award from the Mayor Lizette Parker’s African American History Month Committee. This distinguished award recognizes Taylor as the youth leader that she is.
She is one of only six people who will receive the award on February 3rd at a ceremony dedicated to the honorees. When asked how she feels about this recognition, Taylor said, “I am so honored and amazed. I can’t believe its happening and I would have never guessed that a newspaper article could’ve opened so many doors and opportunities for me to make a difference.” Congratulations Taylor!
